Convert PDF to DXF, for free!

From time to time in the land of CAD Monkeys, you need to convert a PDF to a DXF. There are many packages out there that will do it for you, but they all cost money.  The quality and ease of use varies from package to package, but the end product rarely seems to differ.I was hit with this problem during the week, and like I said in a previous post, money is tight so I needed a free and legal solution. A friend showed me how export a PDF as a DXF in Adobe Illustrator, so I wondered if there was an open source alternative to Illustrator.  After a bit of searching, I rediscovered Inkscape.InkscapeNow, I am in no way comparing Adobe Illustrator with Inkscape. I have no real experience with either of them. What Inkscape has in common with Illustrator is that it can open PDF files and export DXF files. Best of all, Inkscape is free!I started Inkscape and opened my PDF. I then did a save as and selected Desktop Cutting Plotter (R13) (*.dxf) The resulting DXF, when opened in your CAD package …

Draftsight 2015 Not Starting - Windows 7 32bit

I've been using the free version of Draftsight at home (I have a pro licence on my work laptop) and I recently updated it to Draftsight 2015.

Ever since I did, Draftsight would crash on startup. It was very annoying as you can imagine.  I uninstalled, cleaned the registry, removed anything that may have been left over from previous installs, but nothing would work.  It still crashed on startup.

Eventually I came up with a plan. I went in to the properties of the Draftsight shortcut, the compatibility and ticked them all.

I ran Draftsight and it worked. Great news!  One by one I went in and unticked the selections in compatibility mode and tried Draftsight each time.

Every time it worked, every time till I unticked Run in 256 colors.  Draftsight wouldn't start.

That seemed so suggest it was a graphics driver issue.  I checked for an update, none was available (my home laptop is getting on in years). I wondered what to do... I went in to the graphics properties and changed from…

Low cost CAD Packages….

Since I am supposed to be a CAD Monkey, I thought I should write a little something about the low cost AutoCAD alternatives I have come across. Many years ago, I started beta testing IntelliCAD 98 by Visio. Somewhere along the line, Microsoft purchased Visio and IntelliCAD was set free to look after itself. Well actually, the ITC look after it, but that’s neither here nor there. In late 1999, early 2000, a beta of IntelliCAD 2000 by CADopia made its way on to the internet. I obviously downloaded it and it was the start of  a 10 year affair with the product. I currently use CADopia Professional 8, which I purchased back in October 2008 for the princely sum of $249.00.CADopia Professional 8Whilst it does practically everything I need it to do, it is getting rather old and unfortunately CADopia are having some issues at the moment with the above mentioned ITC. This means that CADopia are not releasing any new versions of their product at the moment.Like many CAD Monkeys out there, I don’t …
